Making a World of Difference

Written by Gavin Liu | February 22, 2016

Chinese New Year celebrates new opportunities and the birth of a new year by marking the beginning of spring. According to Chinese tradition, I’d like to wish everyone a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year! This year’s festivities end as Engineers Week celebrations begin at Westinghouse. This is fitting for a company whose long history is based on innovation and constant renewal.

More than 130 years ago, our founder George Westinghouse, one of the greatest engineers in the world, established this company. He wanted to change the world – make it a better place – with his inventions. Some of his innovations still have profound impact on our daily lives and keep changing the way we live and work. That spirit is alive and well in our company today.

In honor of his memory and the impact he and so many of our employees have made, Westinghouse celebrates the innovative solutions our teams create to solve today’s problems. The world faces more challenges than ever: combating climate change has become the common goal for all humanity. Westinghouse strives to make the world a better place to live through the contributions of nuclear energy.

In recent years we’ve seen increasing interest in building nuclear power plants in many countries in an effort to reduce carbon dioxide emission and generate safe and reliable electricity. Countries like China, Japan, South Korea and India will be our fastest growing markets for years to come.

There are vast opportunities in front of us, and we have the talent to achieve them. This is why we invest time and effort in strengthening our local capabilities. From the workers at nuclear plants to customer account managers, these talented professionals are equipped with high-level engineering knowledge and skills. The core values emphasized by our founder are passed on to our employees from their peers, as well as our customers and partners, and guide them to become excellent engineers. And they take advantage of these competencies to help the company win more commercial opportunities in the marketplace.

Speaking as an engineer, I think the most exciting thing for us is to witness the realization of technology we work on from blueprint to reality. At Westinghouse, we’re proud of our advanced nuclear technology – the AP1000® nuclear power plant – and will see one in operation very soon. That is going to be a huge step toward our vision: the first to innovate the next solution that helps our customers deliver energy that’s safer, cleaner and more reliable for more people and a better planet.
