Product Spotlight: Control Rod Blades

Written by Westinghouse Electric Company | March 17, 2021

Control Rod Blades (CRBs) are fundamental safety components to control the reactivity of Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) cores.

Westinghouse’s CR 82M-1, CR 99 and CR 99+ are robust and proven CRBs that provide the long term reliability necessary for extended, shutdown or flexible operations.

Our CRB implementations are part of our legacy of delivering high-performing, long-lasting technology. We’ve been installing CRBs around the world for more than 50 years, with some having operated well above 40 years while maintaining full integrity.

Product Details

  • Innovative design improves retention of absorber materials, delivering a longer service life versus traditional control rods
  • Thoughtfully engineered geometry and structural materials provide high resistance to stress corrosion cracking (SCC)
  • Hafnium pins at the tip protect against ex-core flux during long-term use as shutdown rod
