Successful Cold Hydro Test at Haiyang 1 Drives Delivery Certainty for Westinghouse AP1000® Plants

Beijing, July 2, 2016 – Westinghouse Electric Company has successfully completed another significant milestone toward achieving nth-of-a-kind delivery for the AP1000 nuclear power plant program.

On July 2, Haiyang Unit 1 in Shandong Province successfully completed its cold hydrostatic test (CHT), further confirming safety and quality design features of the innovative nuclear power plant under construction in China. The achievement came approximately one month after Sanmen 1 completed its CHT on May 25.

“Our projects around the world are building momentum for the AP1000 plant program with scalable and repeatable processes that offer an efficient, standard delivery platform for the growing AP1000 plant fleet,” said Jeff Benjamin, Westinghouse senior vice president, New Plants and Major Projects. “Successful tests like cold hydro at both Haiyang and Sanmen as well as the recent module placement at our U.S. site at Plant Vogtle add a level of predictability in plant construction, commissioning and start-up for customers.”

The CHT confirms that the AP1000 unit’s reactor systems can successfully maintain a test pressure of 3,107 psig (pounds per square inch gauge) for 10 minutes without leakage. A successful CHT is an important safety threshold for newly constructed reactors.

Each successfully reached milestone benefits the additional AP1000 units under construction in China – a second unit at Haiyang and a second unit at Sanmen in Zhejiang Province – as well as the four units under construction in the United States. Once complete, the China plants will be the world’s first AP1000 nuclear power plants in operation, offering innovative passive safety-system technology, multiple layers of defense and advanced controls for unequaled reliability and safety.
