Westinghouse Electric Corporation, and now Westinghouse Electric Company, have a long and proud legacy of developing and introducing innovations that have revolutionized our world and benefitted society. Since the company’s founding in 1886, industrial “firsts” have included the invention of electric power distribution for alternating current, locomotive air brakes, natural gas distribution, commercial pressurized water reactors and nuclear-powered submarines.
On November 2, 1920, Westinghouse Electric Corporation’s KDKA radio transmitted the world’s first commercial radio broadcast from a shed on the roof of the Westinghouse East Pittsburgh Works. In that historic broadcast, four Westinghouse employees announced the results of the election for the next U.S. president. It was yet another great moment in Westinghouse innovation.
Westinghouse Electric Company will commemorate that first commercial broadcast on Wednesday, October 28, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. EDT, when KDKA conducts a live radio broadcast from the cafeteria of our headquarters in Cranberry Township, Pa. (USA). The station will feature a series of interviews with Westinghouse employees who will discuss what we do to energize our communities, improve lives and create a greener world.
