This summer, our Indigenous Relations Committee had the privilege of contributing to a STEM camp hosted by the North Shore Mi'kmaq Tribal Council Energy Services Team, an initiative dedicated to engaging Indigenous youth and empowering the next generation of leaders in the energy sector.
The camp was designed to spark curiosity and build confidence in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), offering youth early exposure to concepts that could shape their future careers. As part of this effort, Westinghouse’s Indigenous Relations Committee developed a hands-on activity to introduce nuclear energy in a way that was both educational and fun.
Our team created a domino-based game to demonstrate the concept of nuclear fission. In the activity, youth learned how a single neutron can initiate a chain reaction—just like one falling domino can set off a sequence. This simple yet powerful visual helped participants grasp the fundamentals of nuclear energy while engaging in a collaborative and interactive experience.
Seeing the excitement and engagement from the youth was a powerful reminder of why this work matters. By making complex science accessible and culturally relevant, we’re helping to break down barriers and open doors to future opportunities in the energy field.
The collaboration with the North Shore Mi'kmaq Tribal Council Energy Services Team reflects our shared commitment to community engagement, education, and sustainability. It’s part of a broader effort to ensure that Indigenous voices and perspectives are included in shaping Canada’s energy future.
"We’re proud to support initiatives that empower youth and foster meaningful learning experiences. The STEM camp was more than just a day of activities, it was a step toward building a more diverse and dynamic energy workforce," says Saher Aslam, Systems Engineering, and member of the Westinghouse Canada Indigenous Relations Committee.
Thank you to our partners at the North Shore Mi'kmaq Tribal Council for inviting us to be part of this inspiring event. Together, we’re lighting the path forward for communities, for youth, and for the future of energy.
