As we recognize 140 years of Westinghouse, we’re celebrating the brilliant people whose dedication and ingenuity have fueled our technological breakthroughs. Their stories – and the innovations they’ve driven – continue to inspire the future of Westinghouse.
Introducing Jim Brennan, who started at Westinghouse in 1984 and retired in 2018 as Senior Vice President Quality, Environment, Health and Safety (QEHS). He held leadership roles across engineering teams, driving customer success in a variety of Westinghouse services such as fuel management and plant modifications. One of his most notable memories was supporting the launch of the world's first AP1000® modular reactor in China at the Sanmen Nuclear Power Station.
| FAMILY FACT: Jim’s father worked at Westinghouse starting in 1949. He was part of the design team for the U.S.S. Nautilus – the world's first nuclear powered submarine – and worked as a manager for the Shippingport Atomic Power Station, the world’s very first commercial nuclear reactor. |
"Seeing Sanmen start up in 2018 was special for everyone in the company,” said Jim. “I had worked on this from the early 1980s – and in 2007, we got the contract. To see a contract come in and for us to complete it and see the plant go online was really rewarding.”
Drawing upon decades of experience, he shared words of motivation for both current and future Westinghouse professionals:
“Whatever your job is at Westinghouse, you’re contributing to the success of Westinghouse,” said Jim. “The world needs nuclear power to be successful, the industry needs Westinghouse to be successful, and Westinghouse needs their people to be successful.”
Celebrating 140 years of innovation and impact, we’re continuing a story shaped by remarkable people and defining breakthroughs. Join us throughout the year as we reflect on our journey — and look forward to the exciting chapters still to come.
