It’s an exciting time for the Canadian nuclear industry, as it is busily preparing for the next generation of its nuclear fleet. That was the theme of this year’s annual Canadian Nuclear Association conference: “Building for Tomorrow Today.” More than 30 Westinghouse leaders and experts were on hand in Ottawa last week at CNA2025 to demonstrate how we’re ready now to help Canada turn its ambitions for large and small nuclear into reality.

As one of CNA 2025’s biggest sponsors, Westinghouse provided in-depth looks at its proven and construction-ready AP1000® reactor, the industry-leading eVinci® microreactor and our more than 40 years of experience supporting engineering, outage services and parts for Canada’s existing nuclear fleet.
"As a proudly Canadian-owned company, it was a privilege to share the deep heritage that Westinghouse has in Canada and the commitment we have to ensuring that the nation meets its nuclear energy ambitions,” said John Gorman, President of Westinghouse Canada. “We are growing our Canadian technical teams and providing our ready now technologies to drive significant benefits to the economy and our communities."
Westinghouse recently opened its fifth global engineering hub in Kitchener, Ontario last year. The eVinci Canada engineering team has grown to more than 30 people to date with ongoing investment in research, development and technology.

Kicking off CNA2025 was our Westinghouse Executive Forum, which was headlined by Interim CEO Dan Sumner. During his keynote he discussed the economic benefits and high paying jobs that Westinghouse technology can bring to Canada through our “buy where we build” philosophy of engaging local suppliers. A four-unit AP1000 facility can contribute $28.7 billion CAD to the nation’s gross domestic product during construction, and $8.1 billion CAD annually in operations. The project would also create 12,000 high-quality jobs and offer Canadian companies opportunities to support more than 30 AP1000 units globally.
At the event we also met with many of our Canadian customers and supply chain partners to discuss deploying AP1000 units, AP300™ small modular reactors and eVinci microreactors in Canada and around the world. In addition, we announced new eVinci research and development partnerships with McMaster University and the University of Saskatchewan to increase development of our microreactor in Canada.
“The focal point of CNA 2025 was about building the next generation of our country’s nuclear fleet,” said Fabricia Piñeiro, Vice President of Operating Plant Services for Westinghouse Canada. “Westinghouse's agreements with two leading universities in the region underscore our mission to advance the commercialization of our cutting-edge microreactor technology in Canada.”

This year’s event was a great success, allowing us to highlight that we have the experience and innovation to bring carbon-free nuclear power to Canada across the entire nuclear lifecycle – building, operating and maintaining plants.
