NIS, which measure neutron flux outside the reactor core, are among the most labor-intensive and costly systems to maintain in a nuclear power plant due to frequent calibration requirements and the reliance on outdated analog hardware-based technology. In fact, many operating reactors still use NIS equipment designed in the 1960s, leading to higher maintenance costs compared to modern digital software-based systems, like Mirion proTK™. ![Bild.2](https://info.westinghousenuclear.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Blog/Mirion%20Technologies%20Blog%20June%202025/Bild.2.jpg?width=400&height=221&name=Bild.2.jpg)This collaboration will provide a standard proTK™ configuration as well as a licensing approach for installation of the system in the operating fleet. This drop-in replacement will optimize the long-term operation of NIS in the legacy Westinghouse and Combustion Engineering nuclear fleet by: - Simplifying operator activities such as daily calorimetric calibrations - Eliminating maintenance activities required with legacy analog NIS - Providing enhanced performance with modern and advanced components as well as software-based signal processing The new system will be installed in the same locations as the legacy systems, utilizing existing hardware and cabling. System indications will also be positioned in similar locations as the legacy system. This approach will support rapid and easy installation, as well as minimize disruptions to operations, procedures and training. ###### Mirion proTK™ The proTK™ NIS drawers utilize modern manufacturing techniques with high-quality components and software-based signal processing to enhance reliability and performance. The digital proTK™ NIS drawers support long-term operation of the legacy fleet through lower operating costs and enhanced performance.
