The Finnish utility Teollisuuden Voima (TVO) recently received the first eight TRITON11® fuel assemblies at the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant. Last week the receipt inspection was successfully completed, and the assemblies are planned to be loaded in the core of the second unit during the upcoming outage.

Nuclear power plants are some of the most complex facilities in the world, so it may be surprising to learn that many of them still utilize analog instrumentation and control (I&C) technology. There are several factors at play in the hesitation to upgrade to modern digital systems – heavy regulations, upfront costs and the solid performance of the original I&C equipment. But as more and more plants reach their 50-year milestones and begin to seek license renewals, maintenance and operating costs continue to rise and attracting new personnel with analog experience becomes more of a challenge.

First Triton11® Bwr Fuel Assemblies Completed; Approved for Delivery to Tvo

The first eight TRITON11® fuel assemblies prepared for Finland’s Teollisuuden Voima’s (TVO) Olkiluoto nuclear power plant recently were successfully completed and approved for delivery. TVO representatives witnessed the fuel assembling, final inspection and channeling in Westinghouse’s Västerås, Sweden fuel manufacturing facility. This campaign will be followed by a delivery of 10 TRITON11 fuel assemblies to OKG’s Oskarshamn nuclear power plant in Sweden in mid-2019.
