2018 Westinghouse Family Scholarship Program

July 18, 2018 - Fifteen high school graduates were recognized recently during the 2018 Westinghouse Family Scholarship breakfast. A total of $72,000 was awarded to eligible, dependent children of Westinghouse employees.

Addressing Guide Card Wear

As plants reach their 50-year milestones, the degradation of components is an increasing concern. Guide cards, housed inside control rod guide tubes, ensure that Rod Control Cluster Assemblies (RCCAs) will insert properly during a reactor trip. Guide card wear is an expected aging phenomenon; however, several key factors can play a part in increasing the speed of degradation and therefore your risk of shutdown impact or potential safety issues.

April 9, 2018 - It was a typical winter evening in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (USA): cold and windy, with lingering precipitation on the ground. As I left work I stuck my hands deep into my coat pockets and hurried to my car. Looking ahead, I saw a gleam on the parking lot – possibly ice; the evening conditions made it difficult to see the pavement well. The risk of a slip and fall was very real.

February 21, 2018 - I decided to pursue a career in Engineering when I was a preteen. While I would like to say I was inspired by the opportunity to find new solutions to society’s toughest challenges, I really was inspired by the need to develop an early warning detection system that signaled my mother was coming and I should pretend like I was cleaning my room. As I’ve developed in my career, that desire to create and innovate has matured and gotten stronger. In college I entered the nuclear power field to integrate my personal concerns for the environment with my engineering career knowing that and nuclear was – and still is – the cleanest and most reliable source of energy.
