Westinghouse joined Lower Richland High School in celebrating its 100th anniversary. Students from local elementary and middle schools participated in the day’s events, alongside community members and alumni who came out to show their support.
Westinghouse Electric Company, through its Columbia Fuel Fabrication Facility (CFFF), has expanded its longtime partnership with Richland One schools this year to support programming at seven schools in Lower Richland County, where Westinghouse is located. Awarding a total of $80,000 – Westinghouse Columbia donated $10,000 each to Gadsden, Horrell Hill, Hopkins, and Webber Elementary Schools, Hopkins and Southeast Middle Schools, and Lower Richland High School for the upcoming 2026-2027 academic year and an additional $10,000 to sponsor the Electric Hornets, Lower Richland High School’s robotics team. Since 2023, Westinghouse has donated nearly $200,000 to help fund STEM programs, school supplies, and other classroom needs for students in Richland One.
Westinghouse recently welcomed Jay Keck from the South Carolina Wildlife Federation to our Columbia Fuel Fabrication Facility in Hopkins as part of our partnership with the Wildlife and Industry Together (W.A.I.T.) program. Our environmental engineers had the opportunity to connect on ongoing initiatives across the site.
Westinghouse was proud to sponsor the Lower Richland Sweet Potato Festival in Hopkins, SC. Our team enjoyed spending time with the community, sharing what we do at our Columbia Fuel Fabrication Facility, highlighting our commitment to environmental stewardship, and talking about local career opportunities.
Our Westinghouse Emergency Response Team and employees joined Gadsden Elementary School’s Field Day, just minutes from our Columbia Fuel Fabrication Facility in Hopkins. SC. Students got to meet our Westinghouse firefighters and take part in water play activities. A fun way to stay connected to the next generation.
On April 22, CFFF engineers performing planned inspections found about 20 fingertip-sized fuel pellets in a drainpipe near a sintering furnace on-site. The discovery was reported to plant management, who followed standard protocol and informed the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. There was no impact to our employees, the public or the environment.
On February 12th, Columbia Fuel Fabrication Facility employees Eris Speights, Melanie Burley, and Tiffani Teachey participated in Leaphart Elementary’s “Ladies Love Math” and shared how they apply math in their careers and everyday life.
Westinghouse recently reached out to our neighbors across Hopkins with a friendly postcard to stay connected. As we reflect on our history, we recognize the generations of families who have helped produce nuclear fuel that powers 10% of the electricity in the United States. Looking ahead, we remain committed to the continued prosperity of Richland County and our entire country.
